Northern Midlands Council: November Meeting Highlights & Project Updates

The Northern Midlands Council is excited to share key decisions from the November council meeting and updates on several projects across our municipality. These initiatives reflect our commitment to improving community facilities, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing our region’s natural and urban spaces.

Council Decisions and Approvals

1. Street Banners for Cressy

Funds from the 2023/2024 secretarial budget will be used to create vibrant street banners for Cressy. These banners will showcase the town’s identity and promote community pride.

2. Cressy War Memorial Swimming Pool Committee

A new Memorandum of Understanding was endorsed, formally recognising the management committee for the Cressy War Memorial Swimming Pool. This step ensures the pool continues to be a valued community resource.

3. Perth Community Garden

In response to a proposal from Parents for Climate Change, the council has approved, in principle, the establishment of a community garden in Perth. Final approval will depend on the submission of a detailed site plan by the group.

4. Volunteer and Committee Membership Rules

Council has updated its management agreements to enhance governance while deciding that close associates of council members can still serve as volunteers or join special committees, maintaining an inclusive approach.

5. Campbell Town Hall Sale

Council will proceed with the sale of the Campbell Town Hall in the short term and will reassess this decision in six months to ensure the best outcome for the community.

6. Youl Road Closure (Perth)

A section of Youl Road, from Edward Street to Cromwell Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic. This area will undergo stormwater drainage improvements and be transformed into public open space with shared pathways for recreation.

 

Current Projects in Progress

1. Laycock Street Park (BBQ and Playground) - Australian Government's Local Roads and Infrastructure Fund

A new BBQ area and playground are being developed to provide a welcoming outdoor space for families in the community.

2. Ashby Road Upgrade -Australian Government's Local Roads and Infrastructure Fund

Ongoing works are improving safety and functionality on Ashby Road.

3. Longford Rail Bridge Pillars - State Government Election Commitment 2021

Maintenance and upgrades continue on this historic structure, preserving its legacy. The pillars will be reinstated.

4. Basketball/Netball Quarter Courts - State Government's Open Spaces Program Round One

New sports courts are being constructed in Ross, Cressy, Longford, and Perth to support community sports and recreation.

5. Perth Main Street Upgrades - Australian Government's Priority Community Infrastructure Program

The main street in Perth is undergoing enhancements, including stormwater improvements to reduce flooding risk and create a more vibrant, accessible space for residents and visitors.

6. Perth Junior Soccer Field - State Government's Active Infrastructure Grants Program 2024

Upgrade of the junior soccer field is almost completed, supporting youth sports and active lifestyles.

7. Ross Men’s Shed Expansion - Australian Government's Investing in Communities Program

The expansion of the Men’s Shed will provide additional space for programs, fostering connection and skill-sharing among residents.

8. Breadalbane to Youngtown Shared Pathway - State Government's Active Transport in Tasmania Grants Program

A shared pathway connecting Breadalbane and Youngtown is being developed, promoting active transport and recreational use.

 

Completed Project

Bartholomew Park Playground (Cressy)

The new playground is now open, offering a safe and enjoyable space for children. The completion was celebrated with a community BBQ hosted by the Cressy District Committee.

These projects are guided by the Northern Midlands Strategic Plan 2021-2027, which focuses on enhancing community assets and creating a more vibrant, inclusive municipality.

Mayor Mary Knowles OAM commented on the progress:

“These decisions and projects reflect our commitment to creating spaces and opportunities that bring our community together. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about what’s ahead for the Northern Midlands.”
