Why do I need to register my dog?
Under The Dog Control Act 2000 Section 8(1):
“The owner of a dog that is over the age of 6 months must register the dog.”
Penalty: Fine not exceeding 5 penalty units.
(1 penalty unit = $202.00)
2. How can I pay my dog registration?
You can pay your registration:

In person: Council Chambers, 13 Smith Street, Longford
3. I have moved—do I need to notify Council?
Yes. Your dog’s registration address does not update automatically. You must complete the change of address section on the back of your registration form, or
Contact Council by phone or visit in person.
4. My dog has passed away—should I tell Council?
Yes. This ensures your records are updated and renewal notices are not sent in error.
5. Will I receive a new registration tag every year?
No. Since 2022, Council provides lifetime metal disc tags.
If you need a replacement, contact Council.
Replacement fee: $8.00
6. Does Council offer lifetime dog registration?
No. Dog registration must be renewed annually.
Renewal notices are sent after the end of each financial year.
If you don’t receive your notice, please contact Council for a form.
7. Does my dog need to wear its registration tag in public?
Yes. Your dog must always wear its original registration disc when in public.
8. What are my responsibilities as a dog owner?
You must ensure your dog is:
- Registered once it is over 6 months old
- Microchipped (Exemptions apply to farm working dogs or with vet certification)
- On a lead in built-up areas, unless in a designated off-lead area
- Not roaming and is always under effective control
- Properly restrained in or on a vehicle
- Not chasing or rushing at vehicles or bicycles
- Confined when on heat and kept away from public places
- Cleaned up after (you must dispose of dog waste responsibly)
