Posted on September 22, 2025

Tasmanian Networks Pty Ltd has announced a significant infrastructure proposal to upgrade electricity transmission in North West Tasmania. The route passes through Deloraine, Sheffield, Burnie, and several other communities, crossing five local government areas: Northern Midlands, Meander Valley, Kentish, Central Coast, and Burnie City.

The project includes the construction of 366 new transmission towers and approximately 162 km of new 220kV overhead transmission line, stretching from Palmerston substation near Cressy to Hampshire Hills.

Key features of the project include a new switching station, upgrades to substations at Palmerston, Sheffield, and Burnie, modifications to existing lines, new access tracks, and temporary construction areas. The proposal is subject to environmental assessment under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, focusing on impacts to threatened species and communities.

The application is now on public exhibition. Community members can view project details and interactive maps online or at council offices in Longford, Westbury, Sheffield, Ulverstone, and Burnie. Written submissions are invited until midnight, 18 October 2025, via email (tpc@planning.tas.gov.au) or post (Tasmanian Planning Commission, GPO Box 1691, Hobart Tas 7001).
