Building & Maintenance Supervisor
The Northern Midlands Council is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the role of Building & Maintenance Supervisor. This full‑time position works 76 hours over a 9‑day fortnight and is based at our Longford Works Depot.

About the role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Building & Maintenance Supervisor to lead the operational delivery of building and facility maintenance across the municipality. Reporting to the Works Manager, this role oversees day‑to‑day coordination of the Building & Maintenance team while also undertaking hands‑on maintenance tasks as required.
The key responsibilities of the role include:
- Coordinating and supervising the Building & Maintenance team, including allocating work, monitoring progress and supporting safe work practices.
- Managing timesheets and routine leave approvals in line with Council procedures.
- Overseeing preventative and routine maintenance of Council buildings, facilities and associated infrastructure.
- Conducting inspections, identifying maintenance needs and ensuring timely, high‑quality repairs.
- Undertaking general building and maintenance tasks, including carpentry, painting, minor structural work, pool maintenance and assisting with asbestos disposal (in accordance with regulations).
- Ensuring all tools, equipment and plant are maintained in safe working order.
- Managing maintenance requests from internal and external customers and providing responsive, customer‑focused service.
- Planning and coordinating minor works projects and ensuring appropriate materials and resources are available.
- Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, plant, equipment and Council assets.
- Assisting in the preparation and review of procedures, operational documents and Council reports.
- Supporting emergency response operations as required.
- Presenting a positive and professional image of Council in all interactions with community members and contractors.
About you
You will be a proactive and organised leader with strong practical skills and experience in building maintenance. You will have a commitment to safety, good communication skills and the ability to coordinate a small team in a busy operational environment.
To be successful in this role, you will:
- Hold relevant building trade qualification.
- Have demonstrated experience in building, facilities or asset maintenance, ideally within local government or a similar operational environment.
- Have experience supervising staff, contractors or work teams.
- Hold a current White Card.
- Hold or be willing to obtain appropriate licences or certifications required for plant operation and specialist maintenance tasks.
- Be physically fit and able to undertake manual building and maintenance work.
- Demonstrate strong time‑management skills, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Additional competencies in plant and equipment operation will be viewed favourably.
