Infrastructure and Community Advocacy
- Council continued its advocacy regarding traffic and safety concerns in Longford’s town centre, particularly around Wellington Street, Marlborough Street and the Hill Street entrance to the Browns Shopping Complex. Council resolved to seek support from State representatives and investigate practical measures that could improve traffic movement and pedestrian safety.
- Council also agreed to investigate grant opportunities to improve facilities at the Illawarra Road Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area in Longford, including potential toilet facilities and associated infrastructure.
- In Campbell Town, Council resolved to provide the Campbell Town District Committee with a modified map outlining the proposed scope of works for Stage 2 of the Campbell Town Streetscape Project, supporting ongoing consultation and project delivery.
Recognising Community Contributions
Council resolved to name the Longford Recreation Ground scoreboard the Phil “Fuzzy” Williams Scoreboard in recognition of Mr Williams’ more than 12 years of dedicated volunteer service maintaining the Longford Football Ground. A public unveiling will be arranged in consultation with the Longford Football Club and user groups.
Looking Ahead
Council received and noted reports relating to development services, financial performance and infrastructure planning. Work continues across the municipality on infrastructure improvements, community facilities, planning initiatives and advocacy projects aimed at supporting residents, businesses and visitors.
Community and Governance
- Council endorsed changes to its Australia Day Awards and Volunteer Recognition Policy, introducing a new Senior Citizen of the Year category and removing the residency requirement for Volunteer Recognition nominations. These changes broaden eligibility and recognise the valuable contributions of volunteers who support Northern Midlands organisations and communities.
- Council also adopted amendments to its Consolidated Meeting Procedures allowing online attendance by Councillors to some meetings, ensuring governance processes remain current and effective.
- New members were appointed to the Ross and Longford District Committees, strengthening community representation and local engagement.
Planning Decisions
Council considered several planning applications and strategic planning matters, including:
- Approval of a temporary process change and desludging works at the Western Junction Sewage Treatment Plant, subject to environmental monitoring conditions.
- Refusal of an application for a contractors’ yard and extension of concrete batch plant operations at Breadalbane.
- Approval of the change of use of Druid Hall, Longford, as a community meeting and entertainment function centre, with operating conditions.
- Approval of a dog training facility at Breadalbane.
Progression of Draft Amendment 23-2026 relating to Significant Trees within the Northern Midlands planning scheme.
