Northern Midlands Council Update 17 February 2025

Council held its February meeting, discussing key planning applications, policy reviews, and community initiatives. Below is a summary of the main decisions and updates:

 

Planning Decisions

Epping Forest - Subdivision Refused

Council refused the application for a two-lot subdivision at 13790 Midland Highway, Epping Forest (PLN24-0213) as it did not comply with clause 21.5.1 of the planning scheme. The proposal did not meet the requirement for the excision of an existing use or development as of the effective date of the Northern Midlands Local Provisions Schedule (9 November 2022).

 

Longford – Permit amendment Motor Vehicle Repairs 

An amendment was approved for the motor vehicle repair permit at 41 High Street, Longford (P05-075), replacing the previous endorsed document with an updated letter from the applicant dated 9 January 2025.

 

Cressy - Multiple Dwellings Approved

Council approved the development of three additional dwellings at 6b Saundridge Road, Cressy (PLN24-0031), which will be located alongside the existing cemetery.

 

Evandale - Dwelling and Outbuilding Approved

The application for a single dwelling and outbuilding at 31 Arthur Street, Evandale (PLN24-0147) was approved, including access via right of carriageway through 29 Arthur Street and service connections through 17 Coachmans Road.

 

Western Junction - Long-Term Carpark Approved

Council approved the demolition of existing buildings and the first stage of a new long-term carpark at 139 Evandale Road, Western Junction (PLN24-0107) as part of the TRANSlink Specific Area Plan.

 

Policy and Community Updates

Heritage Incentive Scheme - Policy Review

Council endorsed amendments to the Heritage Incentive Scheme, ensuring continued support for heritage conservation in the Northern Midlands.

 

Street Name Change - Observatory Close, Campbell Town

Council received a proposal to rename Eclipse Close to Observatory Close, reflecting the site’s historical significance as the location of the 1874 observation of the Transit of Venus.

 

Tamar Estuary Management Taskforce (TEMT) Representation

Councillor Adams was endorsed as Northern Midlands Council’s representative on the TEMT Communications and Engagement Working Group.

 

Feral and Domestic Duck Management

Council approved funding for new signage and education initiatives to discourage the feeding and dumping of domestic ducks in Northern Midlands river reserves. A report will be sought on feral duck numbers and their impact on native species and habitats. Information will also be shared via the Council website, social media, and Local District Committees.

 

Illawarra Road Signs Advertising Policy

Council endorsed the Illawarra Road Signs Advertising Policy, which aims to manage advertising signage along this key transport corridor.
