Background
The Australian and Tasmanian Government is committed to upgrading lllawarra Road between Midland Highway and Bass Highway.
Stages of the road project include:
Stage I: Longford roundabout to Bishopsbourne Road ( completed)
Stage 2a: Bishopsbourne Road to the Meander Valley Council municipal boundary
Stage 2b: Meander Valley Council municipal boundary to the Bass Highway
Stage 3: Pateena Road to the Longford roundabout
Proposed works
The works for Stage 2a will include:
• road widening to allow for the installation of flexible safety barriers
• upgrading of some existing access points along the road corridor to improve safety
• provide dedicated turning areas to enable vehicles to turn around on the highway
• an overtaking lane north bound to the Bass Highway
The work for Stage 3 will include:
• road widening between Pateena Road and the bridge over the South Esk River
• installing flexible safety barriers in the middle of the road
• providing an underpass crossing for established rural businesses in the area
• strengthening the existing bridges
• closing some access points along the road that are no longer needed
• a shared user path, requested by Northern Midlands Council, which extends the existing pathway from Pateena Road towards Longford. This pathway extension will provide an additional 1.25 kilometres of separated and safe walking, wheeling and riding opportunities.
Community consultation
The Department of State Growth have been consulting with the local community since January 2021 and are now seeking public feedback on the designs. Plans are also available for viewing at Council Chambers lobby, 13 Smith Street, Longford.

These updated plans are now available for the public to view and provide feedback on until 13 December 2024.
