Community Champions and Volunteers Invited to Shine Through Recognition Awards

Northern Midlands Council is calling for nominations for the 2027 Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Event of the Year and Volunteer Recognition Awards, providing an opportunity to celebrate the people and organisations that help make the Northern Midlands a stronger, more connected and vibrant community. The awards recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to community life, as well as events that showcase and strengthen the region.
A particular focus is being placed on the Volunteer Recognition Awards, which acknowledge residents who have made a significant contribution to a community group or organisation in an unpaid capacity. The awards celebrate the dedication, generosity and community spirit that underpin so many local initiatives, services and events across the Northern Midlands.
Mayor Mary Knowles said volunteers are often the quiet achievers who make an enormous difference to the lives of others.
"Volunteers are the heart of our communities. Their commitment helps deliver events, services and activities that enrich the lives of so many people across the Northern Midlands," Mayor Knowles said.
"These awards are an opportunity to recognise and thank those individuals and groups whose efforts make our towns and villages stronger, more connected and more vibrant places to live."
The Citizen of the Year Award recognises a resident aged 25 years or over who has made a significant contribution to the Northern Midlands community and serves, or has the potential to serve, as a role model. Consideration is given to achievements, voluntary work, previous recognition and ongoing service to the community. Senior Citizen of the Year is awarded to an individual over the age of 65 and Young Citizen of the Year is awarded to an outstanding youth aged under 25.
The Event of the Year Award recognises a community event that attracts strong community participation and positive publicity for the Northern Midlands, highlighting the important role local events play in fostering connection, pride and regional identity.
Nominations for all award categories close on Friday 30 October 2026, with winners to be recognised as part of Northern Midlands Council's Australia Day to be held in Evandale January 26th, 2027.
