National Over 70s Cricket Championships

After two years of renovation work, the turf wicket at Ross has become the headquarters for veteran cricketers from around the State. Its central location and the beautiful township of Ross provides an enjoyable experience for eveyone.

This year, finally, after having to cancel the event for the past two years, Tasmania is hosting the National Over 70s Cricket Championships. Over 320 players and 170 of their partners from all states and territories, and New Zealand, will be visiting the State.

The Championships Organising Committee lead by a stalwart of state and national veterans cricket, Ian Fraser, is delighted to announce that Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, has agreed to 'toss the coin' to officially open the 2022 National Over 70s Cricket Championships and to also open the Queens Jubilee Tree Planting Project.

Everyone is invited and welcome to attend htis historic event.

Queens Jubilee Tree Planting Project

Earlier this year Veterans Cricket Tasmania was successful in receiving a $20,000 Federal Government grant to plant a range of mainly deciduous trees.

Valuable advice was received from nurseryman Mark Hay and local tree consultant Annabel Von Bibra. The Northern Midlands Council's works crew was able to assist with the planting of 80 odd trees which have since been staked and protected with netting as well as receiving a top dressing of mulch by a group of enthusiastic veteran cricketers, many of whom ahve travelled long distances to support the project. A drip irrigation system is scheduled to be installed before the onset of hotter drier summer months.

In years to come it is hoped the trees will provide a beautiful backdrop for the cricketers while playing on the oval, shade for spectators, and a wonderful ambience for all those who visit the ground.
