About the role
This role involves supporting the Works Manager in leading the Works department on a wide range of Works programs and tasks. The Assistant Works Manager will ensure the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of works related to the municipality's roads, bridges, parks and reserves, cemeteries, and public facilities, including planned maintenance and capital works.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
Provide oversight and routine supervision of the Civil Works Team, Parks & Reserves Team, and Cleaning Team.
Deputise for the Works Manager during periods of leave or as otherwise required, including providing effective leadership to the entire Works team.
Supervise and support the Works Supervisor and Parks & Reserves Supervisor to organise and allocate staff and resources in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
Monitor expenditure and purchasing of goods for the Civil, Parks, and Cleaning teams within budget constraints and in line with Council’s policies and procedures.
Promote staff development within the teams and support creative and innovative learning for staff.
Provide oversight of procurement, contracts, and staffing requirements for Capital Works projects within agreed timeframes and budget constraints.
Contribute towards Council’s long-term strategic planning and assist the Works Manager to develop operational annual plans and related budgets for the Department.
About you
To be successful in this role you will be motivated and results driven by nature, you will have great people management skills and the ability to lead and support your team members. You will be organised, have good attention to detail, and able to manage competing priorities under pressure.
Our ideal candidate will have significant experience in delivering large civil infrastructure projects, and have come from a civil works background. For your application to be considered you must have:
A minimum of 10 years combined experience in roles involving leadership and complex civil construction.
Experience in and understanding of construction and maintenance of municipal works and/or other relevant areas.
be willing to undergo a pre-employment medical (including drug and alcohol testing) to determine your physical fitness to perform the role.
Current driver’s license and a commitment to maintaining this.
Local Government experience and experience with engaging with and preparing reports for Councils, Boards or Senior Management teams will be advantageous.

This position is being offered on a full-time basis, working a nine-day fortnight, and will be based out of our Longford depot. Terms and conditions of employment, including salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant and in accordance with the Northern Midlands Council Enterprise Agreement.
