Councils Role in Building Approvals

As of 1 October 2016, Council will no longer provide a Building Surveying Service due to resourcing and future legislation changes. This includes the assessment and issuing of certificates compliance, and associated building inspections provided by a Building Surveyor.

Building Information - Council Role in Building Approvals

Council will continue to provide building inspections, Occupancy Permits and Certificates of Final Inspections for those building works already certified by Council prior to 30 September 2016.

The key change is the assessment of new permits. Council will no longer assess and issue certificates of compliance for works undertaken in the municipality. Anyone submitting an application to Council for a Building Permit after 30 September 2016 will need to provide a Certificate Compliance issued by a Private Building Surveyor.

If you are unsure about where to obtain the services of a private Building Surveyor please refer to the Yellow Pages or Department of Justice website http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/licensing_and_accreditation/search_licence_databases/abp2 for a full listing of accredited Building Surveyors in Tasmania.

If you have any questions please contact the Development Services team at Council on (03) 6397 7303 who will happily assist you further.
